What do all the different “Parts” mean?

Medicare is divided into different parts, each covering specific services:

Medicare Part A
Hospital Insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

Covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services

MEdicare advantage

An alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B) that allows beneficiaries to enroll in private health plans, such as HMOs or PPOs, which often include additional benefits like prescription drug coverage, vision, or dental care.

Prescription drug coverage

Provides coverage for prescription drugs and is offered through private Medicare-approved insurance companies. In 2025, there is no longer a donut hole but the co-pay costs are capped at $2000 annually. Medicare is also offering a payment plan called M3P, that allows participants to spread out there co-pay costs throughout the year.

Do I need to be signed up for every part?

No, most of the time you will be signed up for either Part A, B & D, or you will be using Part C.
